The New York, New Haven and Hartford

The New Haven was a compact giant! It dominated the transportation industry in southern New England. A four track electrified main carried commuters to New York. High speed iron along the "Shoreline" moved named trains, like the "Merchant�s Limited", the "Senator" and "The Yankee Clipper" between Boston and New York. Freight moved from the west at Maybrook, car floats in the city and from the Boston and Maine at Worcester, MA. The New Haven rostered a wide variety of motive power. We bring you passenger and freight electric motors; steam, from moguls and ten-wheelers, to heavy mountains and 2-10-2�s, the fleet of pacifics and the handsome I-5; ALCO DL109�s, PA�s, FA�s and RS's, joined by GP-9�s, FL9�s and more as we tour the main and branches of this great railroad. The Pennsy - And More

The "Standard Railroad of the World"- such was the modest self-evaluation of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It grew to be the largest American railroad through sound, practical engineering and operating practices. But they were also willing to try any new innovation to enhance their efficiency. The variety of motive power that this philos ophy created has long endeared the Pennsy to rail enthusiasts everywhere. Here is a sampling of what this great railroad has to offer. Steam, electric and diesel. Fast passenger trains, commuters, drag freights and heavy mineral trains. They're all included! The legendary K4 Pacific, in standard version, with poppet valves and with streamlined shrouding. The famed I1 decapods, that fans dubbed "Hippos", work on the point or as "snappers" around Horseshoe Curve, and four at a time on heavy ore trains on the Shamokin Branch. The Pennsy's fleet of duplex locomotives, the T1, Q1 and S1 are not forgotten. The enduring and graceful GG-1 electrics race past on the Pennsy's electrified speedway. First generation diesels, including the Baldwin "Shark" and "Centipede". Early intermodal, the "Truk-Trains, are hauled behind shiny-new GP9's. The "Packsaddle", the Buffalo Line and the Horseshoe curve are all visited. Oh yes, the "More" is the coal hauling Bessemer and Lake Erie, with steam and diesel power! Time Freight to Tidewater

This film was produced by the Norfolk & Western Railway in the late 1940's. It documents the movement of freight, one boxcar in particular, from Columbus, Ohio, to Norfolk. We see the car being loaded at the freight house and being picked up by the yard switcher. The switcher drops the car at the classification yard where it is added to time freight number 86. With a Y6 on the point, the first leg of the journey takes us overnight to Williamson. We learn how the dispatcher controls meets on single iron with centralized traffic control. The conductor fills out his wheel report and we follow that report through the accounting department as it tracks the progress of the car for billing. There is a lot of steam action as an "A-class" 2-6-6-4 takes over the train. Finally, the train hits the operator's bell at Norfolk- on-time! B&W, Narration. 16 minutes.

Trains of New England - Fond Memories

Rare footage of the railroads of New England. The "Berkshires" and "Hudsons" of the Boston & Albany, R3 "Mountain-Types" and "Moguls" of the New Haven, "Pacifics" of the Boston & Maine", Two-foot gauge steamers at Edaville and excursions on the Monadnock, Steamtown & Northern are featured. Also seen are the B&M's "Flying Yankee" at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, New Haven diesels at Southbridge, Massachusetts, a New Haven "Bud Car" at Webster, Massachusetts and the famed British "Flying Scotsman" on its tour of the US. Wheels-A-Rollin' - Highlights Of The Chicago RR Fair

In 1948 and 1949, the railroad industry combined to produce the Chicago Railroad Fair. As a part of the Fair, there was a twice-daily pageant based on the history of American transpor tation. Significant historic events were related with a railroad background. Hundreds of actors participated and many of these were steam powered! Whether actual or a reproduction of the original, many ancient locomotives paraded before the crowds. Stevenson's "Rocket", the "Best Friend of Charleston", "John Bull", the "Atlantic" and the "Pioneer" all were represented. "Tom Thumb", "Lafayette", the "DeWitt Clinton", "William Mason" and the "Minnetonka" performed. The fastest steam engine, New York Central's No. 999, the Lincoln Funeral Train, the Burlington's "Pioneer Zephyr" and then "modern" diesels also participated. Color, Narration, Music. 31 minutes.

Whistler's Western - The Boston & Albany Railroad

When the railroad-building craze hit the US in the 1830's, the political and commercial interests in Boston sought to access the vast market potential in the bugeoning west. A rail charter was granted to build a line west from Boston to the New York line. The first leg to Worcester, the Boston and Wor cester, was rapidly completed. The rest of the line, the Western Railroad of Massachusetts, through the Berkshire Hills, was surveyed, designed and constructed by a talented civil engineer, George Washington Whistler- yes, he was "Whistler's Father". His route was graded for double track right from the beginning. His marvelous stone arch viaducts, known today as "Whistler's Arches", between Chester and Middlefield, have been designated National Historical Landmarks. This tape represents 55 years in the history of the B&A and the Western! From the B&A's own "Hudsons" and "Berkshire" locomotives in 1934, to Conrail C32-8's and Amtrak F40's in 1990, with New York Central and Penn Central diesels in between, this is the definitive history of this busy line to Boston. Our best selling program has been "Whistler's Western- The Boston & Albany Railroad". Now we can bring to you a sequel, visiting the "Western" in the days of the PC. Many jokes have been made about the PC, but it carried heavy freight moving over the Berkshires despite many obstacles, political and otherwise. Bruce Malone has worked with us to produce his Dad's film from the '70's through early Conrail, from North Grafton through New York State. Second generation power attempts to maintain schedule despite adversity. Wires, Wings & Warriors - The Milwaukee Electrics

The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway had just added "and Pacific" to its name by crossing the Continental Divide, the Bitterroots and the Cascades to reach the Puget Sound. Before WWI, the road had set an electrification program in motion, to cover the extension from Harlowton, Montana, to Seattle and Tacoma in Washington State. The early days of the electrification were well documented in film and A&R is fortunate to be able to present some of that film to you. From the erection floor at the GE Plant to a ride on the roof of a new boxcab through Deer Lodge Yard (right behind the pantograph!) we show it all! Our research of this old material was assisted by the MILWEST Historical Society for authenticity. You will also see the reliable "Little Joes", originally destined for Russia until the cold war halted their delivery. From Harlowton, across Pipestone Pass, through Butte to Avery, Idaho, the "lines east' are well covered.
