Along the CSX Selkirk Branch

The CSX Selkirk Branch is a 41 mile stretch of railroad that cuts away from the Chicago line near Rotterdam, NY, and climbs out of the Mohawk Valley to reach the immense Selkirk Yard. From the yard, lines continue to reach Boston, New York City and New Jersey. Along the route are plenty of great vantage points to watch the trains. Overpasses closed to motor vehicles, giant bridges and grade crossings are just some of the highlights. F5reight traffic is heavier than any other place in the region. CSX trains are often pulled with an exciting mixture of foreign and leased power! This program captures all the action at various locations along The CSX Selkirk Branch.

Conrail SD80MAC's on the Boston Line

EMD's unique AC-Traction locomotive that fell in an unusual position between the more common SD70MAC's and SD90MAC's. Only 30 of them were built and all became the property of Conrail. The 5000 horsepower brutes could be found across the Conrail system, they were most at home on the many freights on the Boston line. Fans from across the nation visited the Boston Line just to see them! Upon the acquisition of Conrail by CSX in 1999, the MAC's started to disappear as they were relocated to the line's coal territory. BKVP is proud to bring you this program covering the "Big MAC's" in eastern New York, the Berkshires, Palmer, Charlton, Spencer and more!

Exploring Selkirk

In 1968, the New York Central, with lines from New York, New Jersey, Boston and Chicago all merging at Selkirk, NY, took advantage of the location of the small town's strategic location and built a massive facility to handle the job of classifying freight to and from the Northeast's major population centers. Selkirk Yard sprawls over 1250 acres and can classify up to 2700 cars per day. It also operates a major locomotive shop, an auto rack unloading terminal and serves two major customers located nearby. About 80 trains arrive or depart every day.

Maine's Other Main lines

The Bangor and Aroostook and the St. Lawrence and Atlantic are often an afterthought when it comes to Maine railroading. The Maine Central will never be the same, but BAR and the StL&A maintain the hospitality and charm that the MEC lost when taken over by Guilford. While the StL&A is a fairly new railroad operating the former Grand Trunk line from Portland to Island Pond, VT, the BAR celebrated its 100th anniversary of dedicated service to Maine in 1991.
