What's better than a passenger train trip chasing you? Well how about a second trip up the mountain, but this time engine #484 (a 2-8-2) pulls a freight train of 10 cars and caboose. This is maximum tonnage for this locomotive on this piece of railroad, and 484 puts on quite a show. Several times the engine is very close behind our escort train, and it is quite exciting to see and hear every exhaust, whistle, and every curve as the train snakes along the Rocky Mountain ledges behind you. The higher we travel in elevation the deeper the snow gets, and by the time we reach Cumbres Pass, at 10,015 feet we are in a deep trench of snow.
You'll start from the town of Chama and feel like you are back in time, as you experience a view that few people have ever been privileged to see. If you like steam trains, then it just doesn't get any better than the action on these two volumes. 90 Minutes. |
