This film was produced by the Norfolk & Western Railway in the late 1940's. It documents the movement of freight, one boxcar in particular, from Columbus, Ohio, to Norfolk. We see the car being loaded at the freight house and being picked up by the yard switcher. The switcher drops the car at the classification yard where it is added to time freight number 86. With a Y6 on the point, the first leg of the journey takes us overnight to Williamson. We learn how the dispatcher controls meets on single iron with centralized traffic control. The conductor fills out his wheel report and we follow that report through the accounting department as it tracks the progress of the car for billing. There is a lot of steam action as an "A-class" 2-6-6-4 takes over the train. Finally, the train hits the operator's bell at Norfolk- on-time! B&W, Narration. 16 minutes. |
