Illinois Junctions

llinois Junctions is a variety program showing several rural Hotspots in eastern Illinois. If you enjoyed our Rochelle-Double Track Diamonds, then you will like this one with several locations instead of simply one.

First we visit Watseka, which has the old Chicago and Eastern Illinois Mainline going south from Chicago. This line is jointly operated by Union Pacific and CSX, so the doubletrack line sees trains from both railroads, since it splits several miles south of Watseka. The former Toledo, Peoria, and Western, which is now Rail America goes east-west on a diamond crossing the UP/CSX and we see a local there twice. There is also an Alco in operation at the Watseka Grain Company, and we see some other power on mainline trains.

Next we head a bit further west to Gilman. Here we are see the same Rail America Trackage and a diamond with the former Illinois Central Railroads mainline from Chicago to New Orleans. This is owned by Canadian National now, but we see a great deal of Illinois Central motive power, as well as CN, and Grand Trunk. There is a good variety of action here including a Norfolk Southern train, with a BNSF unit coming in from Clinton. Besides the busy freight traffic two Amtrak trains pass the diamond and old depot, including the Illini, and the City of New Orleans.

Heading south we visit Tolono which is the same former Illinois Central Mainline, which crosses the Norfolk Southerns line to Decatur from Ft. Wayne. This is a busy NS line, on the former Wabash Railroad. Once again a variety of power is seen on the CN/IC line.

Further east is Sidney, where the same Norfolk Southern line we saw at Tolono, crosses the Union Pacific's Chicago-St. Louis Line. This is the same UP line we saw at Watseka. There is a ton of train variety here, as we sample several hours of trainwatching. The over-under location is a break from the diamonds also.

Illinois Junctions 2

In Illinois Junctions 2 we visit 4 major locations, plus 2 locations are visited briefly. The first location is Effingham, in Southern Illinois. Here the mainline of the former Illinois Central(now CN), goes south through town, and so does the BNSF and Norfolk Southern, which parallels the CN line for several blocks in downtown Centralia. We see a variety of NS trains, as well as several BNSF coal trains. Most of these coal trains have distributed power units on the rear. NS uses the BNSF to pass through Centralia, and both BNSF and NS cross the CN on a diamond before splitting apart south of town. Trains on BN and NS tend to run a bit slower than CN, due to speed restrictions, but this is a good location for train watching. We also have a special segment watching an older BNSF unit do some switching.

Next we head a few miles north to Odin, where the former Baltimore and Ohio Cincinnati to St. Louis line crosses the former IC line. Now its CSX crossing CN. Here we see a CSX auto train take the siding, and the crewmember throws the switch manually. This train causes Amtrak's northbound Illini to stop south of the diamond, so we get it departing as it accelerates northward.

Moving north we are north of Champaign, at Chenoa and catch two Amtrak trains within 10 minutes, since they had a meet just south of town. The Rail America line crosses here on a diamond and we see the old depot along the former GM&O line, which is now Union Pacific. Both these trains going flying through town in our short visit.

Heading east we visit Woodland Junction. This is located 5 miles south of Watseka, where we visited in Illinois Junctions. Woodland Junction is where the C&EI lines split, and Union Pacific heads east toward St. Louis, and CSX heads south toward Evansville, Indiana. We see a good number of Union Pacific trains, including some with WC, SP, and Cotton Belt Power. A limited number of CSX were seen due to trackwork.

New York Central Steam Finale

New York Central Steam Finale covers the Ohio and Indiana areas that Mr. Warren W. Scholl shot on 8mm color home movies in the mid-1950's. Mr. Scholl resided in the Cincinnati area, and would film lots of steam in the area. In addition to filming trackside around Cincinnati he would ride New York Central passenger trains to Chicago on business trips. Thus, we see several trips aboard the James Whitcombe Riley, and the Cincinnati Special to and from Chicago. Power was exchanged for Illinois Central diesels in Kankakee and this is shown several times as well as engine changes at Indianapolis, and other stops, plus views from the train. This was the last stronghold for New York Central Hudsons.

Santa Fe 3751 Los Angeles To Chicago

In September, 1992, Santa Fe 4-8-4 number 3751 makes an historic trip from Los Angeles, California to Chicago, Illinois following the transcontinental mainline 2300 miles. This was the first time the 3751 had been west of California since the steam era service, and even now it is the longest venture for 3751 since its 1991 restoration. The trip to Chicago was an employee recognition special, and not a public excursion train. The trip marked the first time a Santa Fe steam engine was seen in most of these locations. We were the only company to have two camera crews for most of the journey(Needles to Topeka), and it paid off with one capturing most of the departures while the other would set-up at selected prominent locations such as the Colorado River Bridge, Abo Canyon, and so forth. With water a problem in the desert regions, 3751 had diesel assistance and once up to speed the train was tough to keep up with. You'll see great action as 3751 starts the train from places like Needles, Seligman, Winslow, and see famous locations such as passing over the Grand Canyon Railroad with a GC steamer below.

There is fast action too with 70 mile and hour runbys, and meets with freight trains. At Topeka, 3751 visited Topeka Railroad days along with Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 #3985. Then the trip continues with the run to Chicago terminating at the Santa Fe freight yard. This is big time steam and southwestern scenery on a marathon trip that is not likely to be repeated anytime soon.
