All Aboard For Eureka

The Missouri and North Arkansas was an almost 400-mile long railroad from Joplin, Missouri to Helena, Arkansas. A few miles of this railroad are preserved as the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas. You'll see a 2-6-0 built for use in Panama and re-gauged from 5 feet to standard gauge. Watch the loco spun on a turntable and see it disappear in a cloud of steam as it's boiler is blown down while it waits on a trestle. The yard at Eureka Springs is full of interesting equipment including a wood burning locomotive. Dinner is served in an elegant dining car with flowers on the tables and baked Alaska in the shape of a steam locomotive! The program also includes an interesting history of the town of Eureka Springs, illustrated by almost 100 historic photos. Eureka Springs was founded in the last century as a source of "healing waters". Today, Eureka Springs hosts over one million visitors annually. Although trains no longer carry visitors to Eureka Springs, the Eureka Springs and North Arkansas Railway carries visitors on excursions into the Ozark countryside. You'll get three bonus productions. Pikes Peak By Rail chronicles the famous cog railway that climbs Pike's Peak. Scenic Railroad of the World covers the world-famous White Pass and Yukon. The Georgetown Loop Railroad entertains you with the history and restoration of that famous Colorado narrow-gauge railroad.

Chinese Steam At Work

Steam doing what it was designed to do, in regular service. First we visit the Fengshuigue Coal Mine Railway, with a JS 2-8-2 on a passenger train at a very crisp dawn, then JS's shuffling cars. Next we visit the Benxi steel mill with SY 2-8-2's shuffling hot metal cars and slag cars, continuous action often with several trains moving at once. We even got a peek into a section of the mill where they were pouring moulten steel and slag. Next, it's off to the totally charming Weihe Forestry Railway with it's delightful, tiny 0-8-0's hard at work hauling logs. We caught a passenger train chartered by a Japanese group, and several trains with helpers, the workshops, and generally marvelled that something so small, with such tiny drivers could sound so good. Then we visit the huge Anshan steel mill for more SY's, and lastly the Puhe mine railway with SY's. 2 hours of hard working steam. 2 Hours

Iowa, Chicago & Eastern

The “Coolest” Railroad on Earth

The Iowa, Chicago & Eastern is a Midwest regional formed in 2002 from the I&M Rail Link. The railroad operates on mostly ex-Milwaukee Road track in the states of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. In this show, we'll highlight operations over the entire system. From the beauty of the Mississippi Valley, to the serenity of Corn Belt, this video has it all.

In the summer of 2004, the IC&E re-activated most of the IMRL SD40's and, quite amazingly, SD9 #614. Other locomotives including former IMRL GP9's, SD45's, and of course ICE's SD40-2's and GP40-2's are seen in operation. Watch in awe as former Soo Line GP9 locomotives are seen in mainline local service between Nahant and Clinton, Iowa.

From surreal scenes of the moon rising over the Sabula causeway to
rotating stop sign-equipped Griswold crossing signals, this video is
something to behold. The Milwaukee #261, I&M Rail Link, Illinois Central,
Progressive Rail, and CP/Soo are also seen in this show. Regional railroads are an important part of Midwest railroading, and the IC&E’s operations are testament to the importance of keeping freight moving across the heartland. With the natural beauty of the land, combined with exceptional trains, this video shows you the best of the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern!

Pikes Peak Route

In 1899, the Colorado Midland Railway was brought to its knees by a great blizzard, stranding trains from Colorado Springs to Grand Junction. Almost 3 months of super-human effort finally opened the railroad. The Colorado Midland was the first standard-gauge railway to brave the Colorado Rockies. Until then, only narrow-gauge railways called the mountains home. The Midland served the mining towns of Aspen, Leadville and Cripple Creek. Its continental divide crossing was particularly spectacular with four great loops of tracking rising to a tunnel at 11,500 feet. The Colorado Midland ceased operations in 1918 and was dismantled in 1921. The Midland Terminal bought and operated the Colorado Midland's track to Colorado Springs so its Cripple Creek ore trains could continue. This production includes hundreds of historic B&W photos of both railroads. Incredibly, it features almost 13 minutes of motion pictures taken in 1929 and 1949. Watch B&W motion pictures of a 1929 passenger train from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek. Color motion pictures of a Cripple Creek ore train and the 1949 Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion are included. Even footage of scrapping the track is here. You'll love the railroad stories told by the clean-up train's crew on Feb. 18, 1949.

You'll get two bonus productions. Pikes Peak By Rail chronicles the famous cog railway that climbs Pike's Peak. The Georgetown Loop Railroad entertains you with the history and restoration of that famous Colorado narrow-gauge railroad. 125 minutes.

Railway to Heaven

You'll love all the historic B&W train footage from the National Archives as well as footage of a chapel car in service in Colorado in 1935. There are lots of B&W still photos and color footage of Chapel Car Grace on display in Wisconsin as well as St. Paul when it was still in Montana. See an HO scale model of an Episcopal Chapel Car as well. Railway to Heaven tells the story of 13 churches in railroad cars that prowled rural America searching for souls to save. Operated by Catholic, Episcopal and Baptist organizations, chapel cars operated from 1890 to the 1940s. Missionaries and priests held services and started new churches in over 3,000 towns. Chapel cars were caught in hurricanes, struck by lightning, set afire and surrounded by floods. The first chapel car was the Episcopal Cathedral Car of North Dakota built in 1890. Two more Episcopal cars would roam the wilds of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Evangel, first of seven Baptist cars, was built in 1891. Baptist cars would minister in all states west of the Mississippi and several to the east. Cars were promoted by posters, much like circuses of the day. Three Catholic cars traveled through western and southern states delivering the sacraments and explaining the tenets of the faith to non-Catholics. This is an entertaining and educational video for both railroad buffs and for those interested in an unique aspect of U. S. Christian history.

Rio Grande Steam In The 1960's

Travel back in time with us to explore the Denver and Rio Grande Western (Rio Grande)
narrow gauge operations between Alamosa, Chama, Durango and Silverton. These expertly
shot 16mm films were accumulated by Clarence, Perry, and Jim Becker between 1957 and 1968,
with visits being made in 1957, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1968.

There is a nice mix of passenger and freight operations in this program. The Beckers first ride the Durango
to Silverton Train in 1957, as their introduction to the railroad. As a bonus we see K27 number 464 as the Durango
yard engine, switching coaches in what would be its last season of operation on the Rio Grande. In 1961 the Becker
brothers made a trip to narrow gauge land, and start by photographing a passenger special from Alamosa, and then west of Chama, photograph a doubleheaded freight toward Chama in the late afternoon, followed by more freight operations. Subsequent visits throughout the sixties brings us a nice variety of Durango activities with some excellent shots north of
Rockwood along the spectacular High-Line where the train traverses the ledge high above the Animas River Canyon. There is plenty of freight action, as we see doubleheaders out of Durango up Bocea hill, and headed east toward Chama. There is also a doubleheader seen Westbound between Arboles and Durango. Several runs up the 4% grade from Chama to Cumbres are shown, including more than one run in one day. On one trip the train with rear helper stalls, and the sections have to be split. There is doubleheader action from Alamosa to Antonito, where trains were split, and an engine inserted mid-train for the run west to Cumbres. On one such run from Alamosa we see the first run for engine 492, along with 484, after 492 was repaired from its collision with a huge boulder a month or so earlier near Navajo.
This is a fine collection of images, and all on 16mm. Its 85% color, with only one section being black and white, which was due to a processing malfunction. Like 95% of all vintage films, there was no train sounds on the films, so we have added some nice music, and set-up narration about important aspects of the footage. This is the first of several eventual
programs that will feature part or all of the Becker films.

The Sugar Cane Train

The Hawaiian islands were once the home of 40 railroads. Thirty-three industrial railroads hauled mostly sugar cane on the islands of Molokai, Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii. Except for Molokai, all these islands were also served by one or more common carriers. To get a real feel for railroading, Hawaiian style, ride the Lahaina-Kaanapali and Pacific Railroad. The LK&P is an authentic reconstruction of the trains that once trundled through the sugar cane fields. Passengers ride in replicas of the Kalakaua coaches that ran on the Hawaiian Railroad in the 1880s. Even the steel rails are historic, having been removed from the Kahului Railroad when it was abandoned on Maui in 1966. Start your trip in Lahaina on Maui's west coast. Lahaina's economy was introduced to sugar cane in 1850 and by the 1880s railroads began to move cane out of the fields. Beneath tropical skies in the shadow of the West Maui Mountains, your trip will take you over the 400 foot Hahakea trestle and on to Kaanapali and the Puukolii roundhouse. You'll also see the railroad being constructed and attend its birthing party. Watch its steam locomotives restored and tested on the historic East Broad Top Railroad in Pennsylvania. You'll also get a bonus production. Railway to Heaven covers the fascinating history of Chapel Cars, 13 churches in railroad cars.
