Fostoria - Iron Triangle

Fostoria, Ohio is the point that CSX's North-South ex C&O main line crosses the East-West ex B&O main line at grade, with Norfolk Southern crossing both on the ex Nickle Plate. The area formed by these 3 diamonds is known locally as the iron triangle. Up to 140 trains a day pound the diamonds. We spent two days there from dawn to dusk to bring you lots of action. BNSF & UP and lots of lease units, as well as NS & CSX make appearances. Continuous action. 2 Hours.

Gone Forever - Montreal's Alcos

Many things are gone from the Montreal rail scene. The big (and small) Alco's and MLW's, Via F's, FPA4's and LRC's, commuter F's, flags, open auto racks, cabooses and hooping up orders. This is a much requested redo of our very first program, Montreal's Alco's, completely re-edited with some never before seen footage. Taped around the Montreal area in 1988 and 1989, these are never to be repeated scenes of big Alco's, every train, even intermodals, with a caboose, and most flying flags. Image quality is not as good as today's broadcast digital, but you can't go out and see this stuff! 1 Hour.

Highball Across The Mojave

Needles to Barstow on the newly formed BNSF ex-Santa Fe mainline. This is one tough route, 30 miles of 1.4% From Needles to Goffs, rising over 2000 feet for westbounds and 40 miles of 1 %+ for eastbounds, plus the 25 mile drag up Ash Hill. Brand new SD75's to freshly painted GP30's and 35's. 90 Minutes

Highball Along The Columbia

UP and BNSF along the highly scenic Columbia River between Washington & Oregon in the Pacific Northwest. We covered the line from Cape Horn Tunnel to west of Pasco, and from Troutdale to Hinkle. We were really pleased to find cabooses on the BNSF trains that cross the Columbia at Wishram and on UP's Bend local. We caught UP's Office Car train with the E's and chased him, he was hitting the detectors at 80 mph! We managed to get trans on both sides of the river on several occasions, 11 days of shooting went into this 2 tape set. 3 Hours

Highball Down The Yazoo

Illinois Central's Yazoo District from Jackson MS to Memphis TN through the flatlands of the Mississippi Delta. GP10's with ox-yoke air filters, black SD40's and shiny new SD7O's with the death star on the nose. We didn't expect to like it but we did! The crop dusters antics amused us so I put a bit in the tape. Try it, you'll like it. We thoroughly enjoyed KCS, and so will you. 70 Minutes

Highball Over Cajon

Another tape on Cajon? Yes indeed. I'd never been and the railroads involved have merged. Because of El Nino everything was green, I had bright blue skies (no smog!) and there was snow on the mountains. Combined with hard working trains and power in a rainbow of paint schemes, models from GP9's through SD751's and C44-9W's pIus leased units, LOTS of SD45's (would you believe 7 in one lash-up?) and GP60M's, all working hard or whining downgrade, what more could you ask for? Lots of action at Blue Cut, Sullivan's Curve, Mormon Rocks, Alray, Terrace Cut, Summit and Frost. Check our the mergers and the scenic splendors of Cajon Pass, you'll be glad you did, this one is GOOD! 1.5 Hours.

Highball Over Cajon 2

Highball over Cajon 1 was very well received, the only complaint being it wasn’t long enough! Here, to address that complaint is two hours of Cajon, Part 2! Taped in Spring 2001 and Fall 2005, there’s lots of variety icluding older units from 2001, a couple of units in the new BNSF Railway paint, and an SD70ACe, not to mention several brand new SD90MAC’s (pre wings). Blue Cut, Sullivans Curve, Mormon Rocks, Alray, The Hill, Silverwood, Summit and Frost. Loads of action, including a number of meets, and a 3 train meet on the hill, lots of different paint!

Highball Over Rich Mountain

We had a delightful couple of days on KCS's fourth sub of the Gulf division. This is the north-south main line on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border over Rich Mountain. 6 axle power is the rule here, we saw SD40-2's, SD45's SD4OT-2's and SDSO's, plus some BN and Oakway run-through power on coal trains, all working hard on the grade. The tunnel motors really look spiffy in their nice new gray, red and yellow paint, and we caught several leading. 50 Minutes

Highball Over Silver Zone

UP over the former Western Pacific between SaIt Lake City and Winnemucca, including the paired track with SP (pre merger) through Palisade Canyon. The "Trains" article called this line "Trains in a desolate landscape" and it sure is. We got out and about on the salt Flats, Wendover Hill, Arnold Loop, which to my mind is simply splendid, ranks up there with Crawford. You can see westbounds 13 or 14 miles away, then they round the loop and head over Silver Zone Pass. We Followed the line through the sage brush to Hogan tunnel, then across tine desert (VERY lonely) to Wells, Palisade Canyon and Wininemucca. Splendid desolation. 2 Hours.

Highball Through The Heartland

BNSF's Marceline sub between Kansas City, MO and Fort Madison, IA. BNSF & NS share tracks for 35 miles east of KC, and UP has trackage rights for plenty of variety. Lots of new "Premium Heritage" units, still a decent amount of Warbonnets, and the trains are moveing right along (mostly!) on the raceway east of KC, then through the scenic wooded hills of northern Missouri. Even caught the 4449 a couple of times, 'course it's a C44-9W! Taped in October, 1999, fall colors. 2 Hours.
  $35.95

Highball Through The Rathole

Infamous in the days of steam for its long, tight tunnels and tight curves, the Rathole has been modernised and daylighted, but is still a great show. We covered the line from Oakdale TN to Danville KY, we really enjoyed the area, especially the huge rock cuts at Tateville, we even hiked through the big cut at Kings Mountain. 2 Hours.

In Search Of Alcos

The products of Schenectady and Montreal are our favorite form of motive power, so we look them up whenever we can. We've seen RS1l's and an RS3 on the Winchester and Western, these guys were working REAL hard, immaculate C420's (pretty) and an RS36 on the Apache, M630's on the CP (smoke), C424's, RS18's, M630's and an RS36 on the D&H (lots of smoke) M630's on the Cartier, an RS3 on the Lamoille Valley, RS1's on the Green Mountain, an ex P&W M420 on the Mass. Central, C424's on ST, C420's and M42OTR's on the Roberval Saguenay, an S1 on the Maine Coast and ex FA "powerpacks" on the Long Island. 2 Hours

In Search Of The F's

EMD F units - THE classic American locomotive. We searched out some of the last remaining F's in 1992. We start the program with BAR's beautiful F3 in excursion service, MBTA F10's in their last year of service then in Cape Cod's pretty orange and green, MARC F's and an E and CSX F's in Baltimore. Long Island has ex F unit "power packs," PATRAIN on the last day of service then as Shore Line in New Haven paint. Both Amtrak and Metro North unique double powered FL9's along the Hudson, GO's control cars, VIA and Montreal commuter F's all make an appearance. 1 Hour.

KCS and Kudzu

We followed Kansas City Southern's E-W Transcontinental Division from Meridian MS to Shreveport, LA in August, 1996 Power is mostly 4 axle, the CN wide nose GP4OL's are out and about, looking spiffy in their new paint, there is some 6 axle power, we caught some SD40's, SD45's and a tunnel motor. KCS's units are mostly clean, we thought the gray, red and yellow paint scheme looked pretty good. We got some NS power, including a GE with at least a 6-foot flame at the stack, Delta Southern, some Mid-South geeps, the 3% grade through the enormous Kudzu patch at Vicksburg and a nice meet at Munroe. We thoroughly enjoyed KCS, and so will you. 90 Minutes

Lots of different companies, incluing Gatwick Express, First Great Eastern, Connex, First Great Western, Great North Eastern, Midland Trains, Silverlink, Freightliner, Virgin Trains and lots more. 2 Hours.

Marias Pass

Fall 97 on magnificent Marias Pass, BNSF's mainline through the Rockies. I had some perfect weather and caught lots of the new Heritage C44's, which look terrific against the mountains and fall foliage I started at Shelby and worked through Cut Bank, Browning, Grizzly, Two Medicine Bridge, the snowsheds, Summit, Marias, Java, Essex and on down to Whitefish. I even spent a night at the Izaac Walton to complete the railfan experience of a lifetime. Beautiful fall weather and foliage, stunning mountain scenery, varied and hard working motive power make this an exceptional tape. 2 Hours.

MK5000's Over Soldier Summit

As Monty Python used to put it "and now for something completely different". The Utah Railway has the only 6 MK5000's built, and they ply their trade dragging coal trains over Soldier Summit. They sound very different with their big Caterpillar prime movers, and they look splendid in the Utah's red and gray paint. We visited Soldier Summit in January, 2002, and were granted permission to visit the loader, the unit's cab, and Martin Shops. See and hear these unique units in action! 1 Hour.
