Memories of the LTV

Join C. Vision as we head to the desolate lands of Lake Superior's northern shores to bring you the often overlooked, but amazingly time preserved operation of LTV Mining Company. LTV has been known for its stable of F-9 locomotives, as they toil ore loads from Hoyt Lakes to the docks at Taconite Harbor, Minnesota. In the tape you will see a variety of action, from the mining and loading of raw iron ore, to various runbys of the F-units and a variety of other motive power. Prior to LTV's shutdown, C. Vision cameras were there to capture 9 different road trains, documented from 1998 to 2000 and include GP-38's as well as the famous "6 pack" lashups of A-B-B-B-B-A covered wagons. All this adds up to one great hour of LTV Memories!

Midwest Classic Steam

Experience the thrills of Midwest steam action! C. Vision Productions follows the Milwaukee Road #261 as it pulls three different trains. You will see the 261 as it pulls a portion of the 1998 BNSF Employee Special. This 4-8-4 Northern is also in charge of an Amtrak Special, and a complete Milwaukee Road consist train for the Milwaukee Road Historical Association.

Soo Line #2719 leads a photographers' special on the Wisconsin Great Northern in Spooner, Wisconsin. The train rolls through the western woods in October 2000, when the leaves were vibrant with color!

Sister Soo Line locomotive, #1003 returns to ex-Soo Line tracks on the former Wisconsin Central. We capture the train from Eau Claire to Stevens Point as it heads to Burlington, Wisconsin.

Finally, we see the only operating compound saddle-tank mallet in the United States. The Black Hills Central Railroad in Hill City, South Dakota recently restored this Baldwin to operate the 1880 train. Watch this articulated locomotive negotiate the curves and grades of the beautiful Black Hills!

Minnesota's Railroads, Volume 1 Progressive Rail

Join C. Vision Productions as we capture the action of short line and regional railroads operating in the land of 10,000 lakes!

In this volume, we feature the Progressive Rail. This fascinating short line operates 5 different rail lines in east central Minnesota. We capture all 5 lines with run-by’s and switching at many industries.

The Northfield to Lakeville line is an ex-Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern Route. Progressive Rail purchased this line from the Canadian Pacific in 2004 and operates a daily train each way using an ex-MN&S SD-39 and a former Reserve Mining SD 38-2 in an inspired MN&S paint scheme.

The Progressive Rail also uses two ex MN&S SW-1500’s, along with other SW-1500’s in the MN&S scheme on their other routes. The Highline is another ex-MN&S line that runs through the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington. The Eagandale line is an ex-Milwaukee Road route that runs from Rosemount to industries in Eagan. You will also see two routes that originate in Northfield including the ex-Chicago Great Western line to Randolph and an in-cab experience on the trackage rights train to Faribault.

Progressive Rail also operates a warehouse facility in the Airlake Industrial Park in Lakeville. We see operations around the warehouse facility as the PGR serves several customers in the Industrial Park complex.

This railroad is truly spectacular! Watch all of the Progressive Rail action in Minnesota's Railroads, Volume 1!

Minnesota’s Railroads, Volume 2 - St. Croix Valley and Minnesota Northern

Join C. Vision Productions as we capture the action of short line and regional railroads operating in the land of 10,000 lakes!

In this volume, we feature the St. Croix Valley and the Minnesota Northern.

The St. Croix Valley Railroad runs on a portion of the ex-Northern Pacific Skally line that once ran from the Twin Cities to Duluth and Superior. We follow this railroad as it heads from its headquarters in Rush City to North Branch to retrieve loaded fertilizer cars. Then the train heads north to Hinckley to interchange its freight with the BNSF. You will then be amazed as we view the St. Croix Valley’s green GP-9 pulling a private passenger car from Pine City to Rush City.

Then we head to the far northwestern part of the state and follow the Minnesota Northern. From Erskin, we ride along in the Minnesota Northern’s caboose over the Canadian Pacific’s tracks to Thief River Falls. After passing the historic Thief River Falls Depot, we follow the train and its GP-9 and GP-7 locomotives as they traverse the old Burlington Northern line to Warroad.

These two railroads put on a spectacular short line show! You won’t want to miss this volume as C. Vision continues its look at Minnesota’s Railroads!

Minnesota’s Railroads, Volume 3 - Twin Cities & Western and Minnesota Prairie Line

Volume 3 of Minnesota’s Railroads takes you to the central part of the Land of 10,000 Lakes. First, C. Vision cameras follow the Ruebel Turn on the Twin Cities & Western’s ex Milwaukee Road main line from Glencoe to Renville. On this line we follow two trains. One led with TC&W’s GP-30 Cat #4300 and the other with a visiting Red River Valley & Western GP-15 Cat. This line runs through the heart of Minnesota’s Corn Belt. Many small towns with classic grain elevators keep the Twin Cities & Western busy with grain movement along with a sugar beet factory in Renville. We also get a glimpse of operations between Minneapolis and Glencoe including a slug CF-7 leading a transfer.

The sister company of the TC&W is the Minnesota Prairie Line. This railroad runs on ex Minneapolis & St. Louis track from its connection with the TC&W at Cologne to Wood River. We follow the entire route as two GP-10’s and another visiting Red River Valley & Western GP-20 Cat haul freight over the system. Along with the TC&W line, the Minnesota Prairie Line tracks run through many small towns and pass two restored M&St.L depots. You will love the sound of those GP-10’s as they growl while climbing out of the Minnesota River valley at Morton!

Two classic Minnesota railroads wearing the familiar University of Minnesota colors of maroon and gold put on an awesome display of railroading for you to enjoy in Minnesota’s Railroads, Volume 3!

Minnesota’s Railroads, Volume 4 - Minnesota Southern and Otter Tail Valley

Volume 4 of Minnesota’s Railroads visits two unique short lines. In the southwest corner of the state, the Minnesota Southern operates over former Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha rails. Based in Luverne, this railroads hauls mostly ethanol and liquid feed from locations in Luverne, to interchanges with the BNSF at Manley on the west end and with the Union Pacific in Worthington on the east end. A sharp looking GP-10, lettered for the short lines predecessor Nobles Rock Railroad, puts on a great show as it hauls several tank cars across the system. We follow operations on the Minnesota Southern as it makes runs from Luverne to Manley and to Worthington. Rolling hills, farmlands and electric generating windmills create marvelous Midwest backdrops for the Minnesota Southern.

Then we head to the west central part of the land of 10,000 lakes and document the operations of Rail America’s Otter Tail Valley Railroad. Traveling over ex-Great Northern Rails, the OTVR runs from its home base of Fergus Falls to Moorhead, where they interchange with the BNSF in the adjacent town of Dilworth. This railroad uses first generation high hood four axle locomotives on rails that are good for 40 miles per hour! You will love the sound of these classy old “geeps” as they work hard hauling and switching main line freight! Plenty of BNSF action is also captured while the train is making its interchange at Dilworth.

The Minnesota Southern and the Otter Tail Valley combine unique operations, along with unique equipment and exemplify everything that Midwest railroading is all about! Enjoy the action these two railroads offer in Minnesota’s Railroads, Volume 4!

Minnesota’s Railroads, Volume 5 - Northern Lines, Cloquet Terminal & North Shore Scenic

Minnesota's Railroads, Volume 5 continues C. Vision's tour of railroads operating in the Land of 10,000 Lakes! In this production, we visit 3 unique railroads. First is the newly formed Northern Lines Railway. This railroad operates over ex-BNSF rails in the St. Cloud area. An awesome site is the East Job that uses a Northern Lines painted caboose and crosses the Mississippi River Bridge near downtown. We also follow their ex-Belt Railway of Chicago GP-10’s on the West Job to St. Joseph and a run on the Cold Spring Spur.

Another fabulous shortline is the Cloquet Terminal in Cloquet. Minnesota Steam Spectacular

Come along and join C. Vision Productions as we capture the finest steam action in the Land of 10,000 Lakes! 2003 and 2004 was an exciting time for steam enthusiasts in Minnesota as two classic locomotives pulled excursions on Canadian Pacific rails.

Milwaukee Road #261 returned to its home rails on Canadian Pacific’s River Sub in October of 2003. This line is the old Milwaukee Road main line from the Twin Cities to Chicago. The 261 once pulled freight on these rails and this excursion was the first time the engine rolled down these tracks since being rebuilt.

In the summer of 2004, Canadian Pacific’s Hudson #2816 paid a visit to Minnesota for several excursions. We capture the 2816 as it pulled a special for the Milwaukee Road Historical Association on the River Sub. Then the 2816 joined with the 261 for a double header excursion for the National Railway Historical Society and the 2004 Grand Excursion on the Mississippi River.

C. Vision cameras don’t stop there. We follow the 2816 on a journey over the C.P.’s Paynesville Sub as the Hudson heads for home in Calgary. Then, just when you think all the action subsides, we add a bonus scene with Canadian Pacific’s F-Units leading a Kentucky Derby Special in the spring of 2003 over the Paynesville Sub.

You’ll feel “right there” as you view great steam and diesel action, all with natural sounds and no narration. Enjoy the beauty these locomotives display in “Minnesota Steam Spectacular!”

From sandhills to farm fields, three major railroads travel through the vast countryside of western Nebraska. Take a ride in the cab with the Chicago & North Western as it transfers bentonite clay to the Burlington Northern in Crawford. Burlington Northern coal trains tackle the 2.2% grade of Crawford Hill with helper units. The C&NW also moves coal out of Wyoming on the recently constructed line to South Morrill. From there, the Union Pacific then takes the coal eastward. U.P. then shows off its high-speed movement on the Transcontinental Main Line.

Newcastle

C. Vision Productions invites you to our favorite railroad location, Newcastle, Wyoming. This old coal mining town sits on the east central edge of Wyoming and borders the western slopes of the beautiful Black Hills. It is here that the ex-CB&Q main line from Alliance, Nebraska to Billings, Montana weaves its way through Newcastle. Many scenic spots along this line include long sweeping curves and an original depot that still looks as good today as it did in the steam era.

This line is BNSF's Black Hills Subdivision. It handles numerous coal trains on a daily basis. In this production, C. Vision captures images from 1990 thru 1994 in the Burlington Northern years. SD-40 dash 2's, C-30 dash 7's and SD-60M's take charge of coal trains in the BN era. There are also several LMX B-39 dash 8's and B.N. B-30 dash 7A's in charge of general freights. These historic trains are combined with SD-70 MAC's, SD-70 ACe's, Dash 9-44AC's and ES-44AC's that were captured in 2006 and 2007 in the BNSF years.

Don't miss this show as it captures two different time frames and documents the progression of the BNSF in "Newcastle"!

Newport

Newport is one of many railroading hot spots in the Twin Cities area and C. Vision takes you here for an extensive look at the operations through this suburban city. Located just southeast of St. Paul, Newport is the point where the ex-CB&Q and Milwaukee Road main lines come together, along with the old Rock Island Route. Today, trains from the BNSF and Canadian Pacific operate these tracks. Add in trackage rights trains from the Iowa Chicago & Eastern and the passage of Amtrak's Empire Builder, and you can see why many railfans flock to this location.

The old Milwaukee Road Dispatchers Tower still stands next to the tracks. From its new location next to Newport City Hall, a retired Milwaukee Road dispatcher gives us a tour and shares memories of his time working in the building. View trains from the tower, along with several awesome locations along the main line in Newport.

Along with the BNSF, CP, IC& E and Amtrak, foreign power such as Norfolk Southern, Canadian National and the Indiana Railroad make appearances. Plus, plenty of Soo Line and Santa Fe locomotives lead several trains.

Rails Through The North Country

Are you tired of the same old mainline action? Break away to some fabulous short line and industrial railroads in one of the most beautiful areas in the U.S.! C. Vision Productions takes you to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin in “Rails Through the North Country!”

The first railroad we visit is the Lake Superior and Ishpeming in the Marquette, Michigan region. This ore hauler operates trains with a fleet of ex-Burlington Northern General Electric U-30C and C-30 dash 7 locomotives. Former Wisconsin Central, now Canadian National, ore trains from Escanaba, along with the L’Anse Local also operate over the LS&I. These trains continued using W.C. locomotives at the time of our visit.

Next, we chase the Channing to Crivitz turn on the Escanaba and Lake Superior. In the summer of 2003, the E&LS leased a classic power set from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum located in Duluth, Minnesota. We capture both mainline and in-cab action of the Erie Mining F-9 and Soo Line GP-30 in northern Wisconsin. Plus we catch E&LS’s Baldwin RS-12, number 300, working in Escanaba, Michigan.

Then it’s off to the Michigan Limestone Operations quarry at Port Inland, Michigan. It is here that Chicago & Illinois Midland SD-20’s handle limestone trains on an 8-mile line from the quarry to the crusher.

Awesome scenery and awesome trains…. Enjoy the thrill of railroading in “Rails Through the North Country!”

The Willmar Line BNSF's Wayzata Subdivision

C. Vision Productions continues its look at Minnesota's main lines and visits the BNSF's Wayzata Sub. Often referred to as The Willmar Line, the Wayzata Sub covers 90 miles of territory from Minneapolis to Willmar.

This ex-Great Northern route runs through many different types of landscapes. From major metropolitan areas of the Twin Cities, to the rolling prairies and farm lands in central Minnesota, journey along as our cameras catch the action of freight, coal and grain trains. You'll even see spectacular motive power from other railroads including CSX, Kansas City Southern and Chicago and North Western just to name a few. Several BNSF models also take charge of trains. The Council Bluffs Subdivision of the Union Pacific Railroad is the busiest main line in North America. It is also home to the largest railroad classification yard in the world!

C. Vision tours a portion of the Sub starting at Bailey Yard in North Platte, Nebraska. From there we move east along the line, viewing many runbys through the Sandhills region, and onto the vast cornfields of Nebraska.

The video concludes in Grand Island at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe's flyover. There, we view movement on both the Union Pacific and the BNSF Ravenna Subdivision, which moves mostly Wyoming coal.

Lots of modern power from EMD SD 40-2's, SD 90-43's and GE Dash 9-60AC's are seen in charge of the fast freight on the Council Bluffs Subdivision.

Wyoming Coal Trains In The Powder River Basin Of Eastern Wyoming

The amount of coal transported by rail each year continues to grow. The Burlington Northern and the Chicago & North Western benefit greatly by hauling this coal out of the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Watch as each railroad uses its own main line, and then work together on the joint line moving the coal out of the state.

The Burlington Northern's 5th Sub from east of Gillette, southeast through Newcastle is the easternmost line. This section of railroad hosts much of the BN's coal traffic and also has plenty of general freight and priority trains as well.

The Chicago and North Western operates over a section of its old "Cowboy Line" from Crandall to Shawnee toward the mines. On the Powder River Sub, the C&NW's Dash 9-44 and AC4400CW locomotives lead trains along with a sampling of Union Pacific power.

Then the two railroads join together on the BN's 10th Sub, which is also the BN/CNW joint line. This corridor is the direct link to a majority of the Powder River Basin coal mines.

Shortline Railroading From The Cab

Come along as C. Vision Productions rides the Nobles Rock Railroad in southwestern Minnesota. This is shortline railroading at its best! We ride along with the crew as they haul loaded grain hoppers from Luverne to the interchange track with the BNSF at Manley. Our cameras also capture the engineer working the throttle and brakes of the train in a GP-30 locomotive, as it progresses over the 10 mile per hour tracks.

And that's not all! Take a ride on the Dakota Minnesota and Eastern's 10th Anniversary Employee Special Train from Aurora to Arlington, South Dakota! You will not only get to view the scenery from the cab of the locomotive, but also from the three passenger cars as well.

Chicago is the busiest rail hub in America. C. Vision Productions takes you there in this multi-volume series covering some of the most well-known and hidden hot spots in Windy City Rails!

Volume 1 visits the Tower B-12 Vicinity in Franklin Park and Turner Junction in West Chicago. B-12 has seen many changes in the years and the action today is just as exciting! Canadian Pacific, Metra, Indiana Harbor Belt and Canadian National are the regulars at B-12. Fallen Flag locomotives from the current railroads make frequent appearances including Soo Line and Illinois Central. Other railroads visit the B-12 area including CSX, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern and Iowa Chicago & Eastern.

Then it is off to West Chicago. Here, the Elgin Joliet & Eastern’s Turner Tower is still in operation as it protects the crossing with the Union Pacific’s ex-Chicago & North Western Overland Route. Along with the EJ&E, numerous high horsepower Union Pacific trains pound the diamonds at Turner. Metra also uses this route providing a flurry of activity. You will even see Union Pacific’s Olympic and United Way locomotives heading up a mixed freight!

Windy City Rails Volume 2

C. Vision’s tour of the railroads in and around the Chicagoland area continues in Windy City Rails, Volume 2. In this program, videographer Marshall Beecher sets up at two exciting locations and captures more dynamic train watching action!

Our first stop is at Stateline Interlocking near Hammond, Indiana. Straddling the Illinois and Indiana border, Stateline was once the World’s largest mechanical interlocking. This location was once home to 30 diamond crossings and has now whittled down to only 8. However, don’t let the downgrade fool you, this location still has over 100 trains a day from the CSX, Norfolk Southern and Indiana Harbor Belt.

Then we head to Chicago Heights, Illinois at Jay Tower. This location is the crossing of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern and the Union Pacific/CSX. The variety of trains at this location makes it a favorite among many area railfans! Bright orange locomotives from the EJ&E, along with the high horsepower monsters from the UP and CSX thunder over the diamonds at Jay Tower. Our cameras were even treated to a couple appearances of the Union Pacific’s Katy and MoPac Heritage Locomotives!

If you like the sound of trains pounding diamonds, you will love this video!

Windy City Rails Volume 3 - Blue Island Junction

C. Vision’s tour of railroads in and around the Chicagoland area continues in Windy City Rails, Volume 3.

In this program, videographer Marshall Beecher takes his cameras to multiple mainline crossings at the always busy Blue Island Junction.

This location, most often distinguished by the big steel bridges spanning the Calumet Sag Channel, has a multitude of activity from host roads Indiana Harbor Belt, CSX, Canadian National and Metra's Rock Island District, which passes over the south end of the junction. Throw in a wide variety of pool power and the appearance of run-through moves by roads Canadian Pacific, Union Pacific and BNSF and you will see why Blue Island Junction is such a great Chicagoland hotspot.

Due to the unique track arrangement of the junction, parallel moves from various roads can be seen occurring simultaneously, a sight our cameras had the opportunity to catch on many visits. In addition, short line and regional action was found, including appearances from the Iowa Interstate and Chicago Rail Link. Add in predecessor power from the UP, BNSF and the CN, and you will witness the cornucopia of action that this legendary hotspot is known for.

For a colorful spectrum of freight and passenger action, Blue Island Junction cannot be beat!

Windy City Rails Volume 4 - BNSF’s Triple Track on the Aurora Subdivision

C. Vision’s tour of railroads in and around the Chicagoland area continues in Windy City Rails, Volume 4.

In this program, videographer Marshall Beecher takes his cameras to several locations along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe’s Triple Track Main from Chicago to Aurora. This ex-Chicago Burlington and Quincy main line does double duty as it hosts trains traversing to and from the Twin Cities on the Aurora Sub and Galesburg on the Mendota Sub. Numerous high priority intermodal, coal and general freight trains share these rails with Amtrak and Metra. Run-through trains from the Canadian National and Union Pacific also operate on the Triple Track. At the east end near Union Avenue, witness several of Union Pacific’s ‘Z’ trains which cross the Triple Track, and see U.P. movements with several of their Heritage locomotives! All this movement makes the Triple Track one of the busiest main lines in the Chicago area.

Just about every kind of locomotive that the BNSF rostered in 2007 can be seen in this program! Add in all that variety along with over 150 trains featured in this show and you have one of the best BNSF programs anywhere!!!
