POETRY IN MOTION II
The Powhatton Arrow Circa 1957
This is the Norfolk & Western class-J locomotive pulling the Powhattan Arrow with a 1957 Thunderbird pacing the train through the
Virginia countryside. Of note is the Burma Shave signs in the background. Once again, the theme is major highways paralleling major
main lines. Even though this was a commission, the idea was basically mine to have the highway paralleling the main line. This
continues on the same theme of Rainy Night In Georgia and Get Your Kicks On Route 66. A picture is worth a thousand words and by
looking at this, you can basically sum up operations on the Norfolk & Western in the late 1950's. The Norfolk & Western was the
very last railroad in the United States to have mainline steam power powering it trains up until about 1960. It's appropriate in
this view to have it pacing the modernized 1957 Thunderbird.
